meta tags

In this chapter it's all about Meta tags. These are codes in HTML headers of web pages that help describe and classify their content.

Check the source codes of your web pages. They should provide Title and Meta tags like this header one from www.stepintogerman.org:

title: step into german
meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"
meta name="description" content="Step into German"
meta name="abstract" content="Step into German invites you to learn more about Germany and the German language."
meta name="keywords" content="step into german,step,german,goethe-institut,goethe,institut,learn german,high schools,middle schools,germany,german music,music quiz,aatg,clta"
meta name="robots" content="index"
meta name="robots" content="follow"
meta name="language" content="english"
meta name="Content-Language" content="en"
meta name="distribution" content="global"
meta name="robots" content="all"
meta name="revisit-after" CONTENT="2 days"
meta name="author" content="i-d-online.com"

Let's put the most common Meta tags into 3 categories.
Strongly suggested: title, keyword, description.
Recommended: abstract, revisit, robots.
Optional: author, language, distribution, expire, copyright

Having a uniquely optimized Title tag on each page is critical for obtaining the best possible placement within search engine results. Together with your Domain name the Title tag is the most important element for the web crawlers. When a potential customer types in a search query to find a business or service you provide, the search engine tries to match that search with delivering web pages with perfectly fitting title tags. For example, a web visitor types in "Cat food". #1. Your URL: You would obviously rank better if your domain was catfood.com or cat-food.com The URL here is extremely relevant to the business.  #2. Page Title: If my url is petsupply.com I also want to make sure "pet" and "supply" are the first two words in my title tag. The page title is often times one of the first places search engine robots look to identify your content. Make your page title effective and relevant. Include keywords that drive your business.

Optimize the keywords in the Meta tags. Keywords are a crucial ingredience when it comes to search results. What is the best choice for your keyword meta tag? You should always try to think as your visitors and not like a webmaster. Thinking like an average web visitor will make you more successful. But what can you do if your keywords are too common? Is there anything that can help you optimise your keywords to gain more traffic to your website? To start with try including misspellings in your meta tag keywords as this can help you to get visitors who don't know how to spell or those, like me, who type too fast.

Search engines often capture the Meta tag description, but keep in mind that when a search engine displays the results to a user, space is limited! Usually they grab under 20 words of the description tag.The Meta tag abstract is very similar to the Meta tag description, except its just a brief summary of the description META tag which is not as often listed in search results as the description tag. Generally the Abstract Meta tag is a one line sentence which gives an overview of the entire webpage. It is a useful complement to search engines that like to read the first few lines of text of webpages.
